The short answer: Copilot is free (2,000 completions and 50 chat requests a month), then $10 for Pro, $39 for Pro+ and $100 for Max. Each paid plan includes a monthly pool of AI credits, worth $0.01 each: $15 on Pro, $70 on Pro+, $200 on Max. Inline code completions do not use credits and stay unlimited. Chat, agent mode, code review and the CLI do. If an article quotes “300 premium requests”, it describes the billing GitHub retired on 1 June 2026.

Business is $19 and Enterprise $39 per user a month. Per GitHub’s organisation billing docs, each user brings 1,900 (Business) or 3,900 (Enterprise) credits into a pool shared across the organisation. GitHub’s announcement gave promotional credits of $30 (Business) and $70 (Enterprise) a user for June to August 2026; that window has ended, so the standard 1,900 and 3,900 apply. Annual prices are not shown on the pages we read.
Base credits versus flex credits
The base allotment equals the plan price ($10 buys 1,000 credits). The extra “flex” allotment is, in GitHub’s words, designed to adapt “as the economics of AI evolve, including model pricing, new models, and improvements in efficiency.” Read that plainly: the bonus half of your allowance is not a fixed promise. On Pro, one third of the pool is flex. Base is the number to plan around.
What uses credits
Credits are calculated from token consumption, input, output and cached, at each model’s listed API rate. That covers chat, the CLI, the cloud agent, Spaces and Spark. Code completions and next edit suggestions are not billed in credits. GitHub notes usage depends on conversation length, how many model calls an agentic task makes, and model choice, with more capable models costing more. It publishes no “credits per task” figure, so we give none.
If you read old advice
Before 1 June 2026 Copilot counted premium requests: Pro had 300 a month and Pro+ 1,500, extra requests at $0.04 each. GitHub’s own requests page still describes that model. The current plans page and billing docs use AI credits. Annual subscribers keep premium-request pricing until their term ends, then move to monthly plans with credit allowances. The two units do not convert cleanly, because a credit tracks tokens and a premium request tracked prompts.
When the credits run out
Per GitHub’s docs, unused credits are forfeited and reset at 00:00 UTC on the first of the month. When you hit zero you can upgrade, set a budget for additional usage (billed at $0.01 per credit), or wait for the reset. Completions keep working meanwhile.
Which plan
Pick Free to try completions. Pick Pro if you mostly want completions with occasional chat: its $15 pool is small if you run the agent daily. Move to Pro+ or Max only when you have watched your usage for a month, since the meter, not the sticker, sets the real cost.
